I took a look at some of the online offers for free GPS software and found, like many "free" offers there were often limits and provisos involved. Often the freeware is a scaled--down version of purchasable products. Sometimes the free product has restricted functionality with features disabled, other products are trial--based and are disabled after a certain time (hours or days or use).

Now, surely there is no way that a app for the iPhone can match all the features of a SkyCaddie, anymore than a Ford Fiesta can match all the features of a BMW. But people do drive around in inexpensive compact cars and they do get everywhere they need to go (without the luxury of course).

So, if you want a golf GPS device that costs less than a round of golf, but one that can still get you safely around the course, you might consider a smartphone app rather than a much more expensive standalone device. Here are some of the pros and cons of using a smartphone app.

The price. There is really no comparison here. If you already own a smartphone, then the cost of a good GPS app can be less than one tenth of the cost of a standalone unit.
Free trial. You can download many of these apps for free and try them out with no obligation to buy. This is a relatively hassle-free way of testing the waters to see what the various apps have to offer.
Touchscreen. Many phones like the iPhone or the BlackBerry Storm have touchscreens. Smartphone golf apps often display an aerial view of the course and the golfer can pinpoint any spot on the course to get instant feedback. This is a feature that some of the more expensive models lack. SkyCaddie, GolfLogix, and Sureshot, for instance, do not have touchscreens and do not have a view of the fairway at all.
No subscription or annual fees. With most golf GPS apps, you can usually download all the courses you need or you can use software to map your own courses for free. For some of the top brands subscriptions and annual fees alone can cost much more than a smartphone app.
Cons
Accuracy of GPS. There is debate about whether or not the GPS chip in smartphones is accurate enough for golf. The iPhone claims its GPS is accurate to within 1-7 yards. But the maximum error of 7 yards is still a long way from the 1-3 yards of SkyCaddie or the sub-meter accuracy of Sureshot.
Accuracy and number of mapped courses. You may have to settle for fewer available course maps. Generally with phone apps you will not get professionally mapped courses: there are no armies of mappers (ala SkyCaddie) walking courses to mark all the key spots with pinpoint precision. More likely you will have to settle for self-mapped courses or courses mapped by your fellow software users (mostly from Google Earth). How accurate these maps are is debatable.
Battery life. Golf GPS apps can be a huge drain on cellphone batteries. You may find yourself just barely able to finish a round with a fully charged battery. The standalone devices, on the other hand, have batteries that can last for several rounds of golf.
There may be no clear decision to make here: it will probably come down to personal choice (and economics).

(There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.

There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto--navigation system. If you intend downloading in--vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.
Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.
As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.
Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.

Initial Setup
The packaging for this watch is compact and easy to open - very similar to how Apple packages their nanos and related products. The box contained the watch, a foot pod, cord, and very very brief instructions. The instructions basically tell you to plug the watch into your computer and download the user guide (and then this is repeated in 15 different languages). The edge of the watchband serves as a USB port so you literally just plug the watch right into the computer. This port has a plastic hinge which I'm already afraid will break, but so far so good. Once plugged you download some software and either set up a nikeplus account or login using your existing nikeplus account. While your watch is charging you can customize your settings giving you a display that most interests you (i.e. average pace, distance, clock, etc.)
